Just How Dangerous Is It To Have Cockroaches In My McKinney Home?

7/15/2020

Cockroaches are, to put it not so eloquently, gross. They can grow quite large, they can infest in droves, and they are unpleasant to see around the house. However, did you know that cockroaches are more than just unsightly? That’s right, cockroaches are dangerous too. They are known to spread dangerous bacteria and diseases as they move about homes. Because of this, you need to act quickly if you suspect you might have a cockroach infestation on your McKinney property. Your family’s health could depend on it.

Identifying Common Area Cockroaches

All cockroaches have flat, oval-shaped bodies with six legs and long antennae. This alone should help you to identify any roaches that may be in your home. But there are five different species of cockroaches that you are likely to encounter here in Texas. These species are American cockroaches, brown-banded cockroaches, German cockroaches, Oriental cockroaches, and wood cockroaches.

  • American Cockroaches are large and capable of flying. They feature a yellowish figure-eight pattern behind their heads.

  • Brown-banded Cockroaches have brown bodies with two tan bands running across them as their name indicates. Male brown-banded cockroaches are capable of flying, but the females, who have underdeveloped wings, are not.

  • German Cockroaches are brown in color and feature two black stripes across their bodies. Though they are capable of flying, they do so only rarely.

  • Oriental Cockroaches have shiny, dark-brown bodies about an inch long. They are not capable of flight. Oriental cockroaches are very attracted to high-moisture areas.

  • Wood Cockroaches are dark brown and their wings and thoraxes are outlined by a whitish-yellow line. The males are capable of momentary flight while the females cannot fly at all.

What Attracts Cockroaches To Homes?

In general, cockroaches enter homes in search of shelter, food, and water. For this reason, it is imperative that you take the proper steps to limit these things. This means keeping food stored in tightly-sealed containers, wiping up spills from countertops and floors, not keeping dirty dishes piled up in the sink, and regularly taking out the trash to cans with tight-fitting lids.

In addition to this, you can limit your exposure to cockroaches by removing their entry points. Cockroaches usually enter through cracks around doors and windows or in your home’s foundation. They can also enter through torn screens and vents. Sealing any cracks around the exterior of your home and fixing damaged screens can help to prevent cockroaches from gaining access to the interior of your home.

The Dangers of Roaches

As previously stated, cockroaches are dangerous due to the numerous bacteria, diseases, and human pathogens that they can spread as they move about. Any surface a cockroach touches is in danger of contamination. This could be countertops, floors, dishes, or even the food in your cupboards. If cockroaches gain access to your home, the diseases they might spread include dysentery, salmonellosis, gastroenteritis, and E. coli.
